Yield point phenomena in metals, anticracks in soils and snows, or planewise collapses in lattice metamaterials, are different manifestations of plastic instabilities characterized by stress softening and strain localization. Several independent constitutive descriptions exist and suffer from similar challenges: experimental difficulties to link local events to global measurements, and computational lack of convergence, spurious localization and mesh sensitivity. This work proposes a minimal field-agnostic constitutive framework where plastic softening is represented by a damage-like internal variable which explicitly separates stable hardening behavior from unstable softening. The resulting formulation admits a variational structure and can leverage regularization tools originally developed by the ductile fracture community. The framework aims at emphasizing similarities within plastic instability phenomena and establishing a bridge with continuum damage mechanics, to open a path towards regularized variational formulations of localized plastic flows.
Cohesive zone models are widely used to describe fracture and interfacial failure, yet most formulations prescribe problem-specific analytical traction-separation laws together with phenomenological rules for unloading and reloading, leading to specialized models for different cohesive behaviors. This work develops a u...
Accurate prediction of ductile fracture in steels requires a mechanistic understanding of the evolution of microstructural voids under multiaxial loading. This work presents a mesoscale finite element framework implemented in Abaqus to characterise fracture initiation in structural steel using a representative volume e...

We set up and investigate an approximation scheme for a variational theory of cohesive fracture in antiplane shear deformations. We consider a family of functionals acting on scalar valued functions in general dimensions depending on a small parameter $0<\varepsilon \ll 1$ and on two fields: the elastic part of the dis...

Understanding dynamic fracture in both brittle and ductile materials has attracted considerable attention from engineers and researchers due to its practical importance. In ductile materials, crack initiation and growth are strongly influenced by plastic deformation and the associated microstructural damage, which grad...

The bond‐associated quadrature point formulation is a very accurate peridynamic formulation for elasticity, but modeling fracture by the traditional deletion of bonds can trigger severe numerical instabilities. These instabilities are most pronounced for wave‐induced fracture, where stress waves continue to propagate...
