A conceptual framework is developed that describes why users might seek to augment reality, what is missing from everyday experiences that AR could provide, which aspects of reality are useful to augment, and how AR content could relate to the real world.
Abstract
Augmented Reality (AR) is increasingly positioned as the next frontier in personal computing, yet how it would actually integrate into everyday life remains poorly understood. We investigate the promise of everyday AR by analyzing (1) 184 practitioner-created vision videos and (2) 1467 user-generated visions based on first-person recordings of 30 participants’ everyday lives. From this dual perspective of both practitioner knowledge and lived experiences, we develop a conceptual framework that describes why users might seek to augment reality, what is missing from everyday experiences that AR could provide, which aspects of reality are useful to augment, and how AR content could relate to the real world. Our findings reveal new opportunities for everyday AR and provide a framework to think about AR use in diverse real-world settings.
Rooted in phenomenological anthropology, research among Social Virtual Reality (SVR) users in VRChat suggests a more complex process, which develops gradually via prolonged exposure and bodily attunement, shifting from initial novelty toward practices of optimization.

As XR technologies continuously evolve, research has increasingly examined XR systems that integrate multiple forms of reality. This has given rise to the concept of "multi‑reality", an experience that span user interactions across the Reality-Virtuality (RV) continuum: reality, augmented reality (AR), augmented virtua...
