Regional Variation in Plant Community Composition and Soil Properties of Alcea nudiflora Habitats Along an Elevational Gradient in the Trans-Ili Alatau, Kazakhstan

Abstract

Wild plant populations in mountain ecosystems often depend on specific combinations of soil, vegetation and microsite conditions. Alcea nudiflora (Lindl.) Boiss. is a poorly studied Malvaceae species in Central Asia, and its population structure across different soil and vegetation conditions in the Trans-Ili Alatau remains insufficiently documented. We assessed three natural populations of A. nudiflora along an elevational gradient in the Trans-Ili Alatau, Kazakhstan: P1 at 900 m a.s.l., P2 at 1438 m a.s.l. and P3 at 1620 m a.s.l. Floristic composition, vegetation structure, ontogenetic stages and soil physicochemical properties were analysed using field surveys, 10 × 10 m plots, soil descriptions, laboratory analyses and exploratory ordination. P1 occurred in relatively open meadow–shrub vegetation and showed the strongest coenotic expression of A. nudiflora, with 62 individuals recorded within the 100 m2 vegetation plot and a broad representation of major ontogenetic stages. In P2, A. nudiflora remained a regular component of shrub–meadow and forest-edge vegetation, whereas in P3, the species occurred sparsely and was restricted to meadow openings, forest-edge gaps, and local microsites. Surface soil properties varied among habitats. In the upper horizon, P1 had 3.67% humus, 95.2 mg kg−1 readily hydrolysable N, 36.0 mg kg−1 available P2O5, 610 mg kg−1 available K2O, pH 8.41 and 4.28% CO2; P2 had 3.72% humus, 39.2 mg kg−1 readily hydrolysable N, 44.8 mg kg−1 available P2O5, 450 mg kg−1 available K2O, pH 8.23 and 0.54% CO2. PCA explained 37.1%, 33.8% and 9.4% of variance on PC1–PC3, summarizing gradients of nutrients, texture, carbonates and alkalinity. The results indicate that population status is associated with surface soil conditions, vegetation structure and microsite availability rather than elevation alone.

Soil properties and tree diversity along elevational gradients in a tropical agroforestry landscape in the Philippines

The Philippines is known for its archipelagic geography and tropical climate, which support a wide range of organisms. However, determining the relationship between soil physicochemical properties and tree diversity in agricultural landscapes has been less explored. This study assessed whether soil physicochemical char...

Soil macrofauna diversity and abundance in relation to soil properties: A case study of dryland ecosystems in Rante village, Tana Toraja, Indonesia

The Tana Toraja District in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, is distinguished by its varied topography, including valleys and mountains. The dryland soils in this region are predominantly sandy to light loam and are characterized by low organic matter and fertility. Soil macrofauna are integral to enhancing soil physical pro...

Interplay of soil characteristics and elevation influences performance of widespread plant species in the Himalaya

The climate change–driven reshuffling of floristic elements has recently gained attention, yet the mechanistic bases of these shifts remain poorly understood. Here, we examined how variation in soil chemical characteristics associated with an elevational gradient influences the early performance of lowland widespread p...

Diversity Patterns and Land Snail Assemblage Structure in the Forest‐Savannah Mosaic of Lamto Reserve, Central Côte d'Ivoire

This study assessed the diversity and structure of land snail assemblages in the forest‐savannah mosaic of the Lamto Reserve. Snails were sampled monthly for 1 year using direct search and litter sieving across eight plots (4 plots of 400 m 2 per habitat type). A total of 749 individuals belonging to 18 species a...

Soil–diversity relationships in refugial endemic coniferous forests of the Balkan Peninsula

Refugial coniferous forests of South-East Europe represent unique and poorly studied forest ecosystems. Shaped by contrasting maritime and continental climatic influences and complex orography, these forests support several endemic and relict tree species. We investigated soil and vegetation properties and...

Macrofungal Diversity and Fruiting Patterns in a Threatened Mediterranean Ecosystem: The Case of the Leonina Biancane (Tuscany, Italy)

Mediterranean badlands are highly dynamic, erosion-prone systems whose ecological communities are sensitive to climate and land use change. Despite extensive research on geomorphology, erosion and vegetation, their fungal communities remain unexplored. This study provides the first ecological characterization of macrof...
