Abstract
Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) constitutes a major industrial method for solution-processed fabrication of thin films and coatings. Conventional protocols require high applied voltages (50–1000 V) that induce parasitic electrochemical reactions, limit substrate compatibility, and create safety hazards. Here, we demonstrate that intrinsic surface charge density of size-controlled metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, together with particle size and solvent properties, governs electrophoretic mobility and enables high-quality EPD in aqueous media at 1 V, well below the threshold for water electrolysis. Compact, uniform films of MOF nanoparticles with thicknesses >10 μm deposit in 30 min, due to higher ζ-potentials and electrophoretic mobilities that improve with smaller particle sizes, whereas nonporous colloids require hours. Deposition occurs on a wide range of conductive substrates, enabling real-time monitoring of film thickness with quartz crystal microbalance devices and, as a result, the formation of redox-intercalation thin films with programmable capacitance and ion-insertion kinetics. These results provide an energy-efficient, safer, and rapid method for uniform thin-film assembly with thicknesses controlled to nanometer resolution.
Zn3P2 thin films were deposited on stainless-steel foils via aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) using N-phenyl phosphine carboxamide as an air-stable phosphorus precursor in combination with zinc acetate. The as-deposited films were directly employed as binder-free electrodes in sodium half cells, elim...

Atomic layer-deposited (ALD) alumina (Al2O3) thin films are widely employed in sensor and device fabrication as an insulating and protective layer. However, definitive studies on the aqueous stability of sub-10 nm ALD films remain limited, which poses a challenge for evaluating their long-term performance in electroche...

FeCo₂O₄ thin films were successfully deposited onto stainless steel mesh (SSM) substrates using a simple, scalable, and binder-free chemical bath deposition method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating FeCo₂O₄ thin films directly deposited on SSM as binder-free electrodes for supercapaci...

Organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) are key components for large-area and mechanically flexible electronic devices, and reliable fabrication methods beyond direct physical vapor deposition (PVD) are required, particularly for technical and non-planar surfaces. We fabricated organic TFTs by transferring organic small-m...
