TL;DR

This work proposes HoOPOE (Holography-Optimized Perceptual ObjectivE function), a CGH-specific, perceptually-aware loss function that hides speckles from human vision and yields the most visually pleasing results.

Abstract

Holographic devices must reconstruct an entire light field given a finite number of spatial light modulator (SLM) pixels, and must do so using scalar-wave diffraction from coherent illumination alone. As a result, computer-generated holography (CGH) often has speckling artifacts. We propose HoOPOE (Holography-Optimized Perceptual ObjectivE function), a CGH-specific, perceptually-aware loss function that hides speckles from human vision. HoOPOE is effective for CGH optimizations because it accounts for the human visual system's sensitivity to spatio-temporal frequencies and color, and its parameters are tuned to maximize its performance as a loss function for CGH. We use HoOPOE to generate holograms for mesh-derived focal stacks. We then conduct a user study to benchmark HoOPOE-generated holograms against existing loss functions. HoOPOE yields the most visually pleasing results; users prefer HoOPOE 68% of the time over the next best objective function on average.

Digital twin for full field-of-view Fraunhofer holographic patterning

Computer-generated holography allows for nearly complete dynamic control of optical fields, but discrepancies between idealised propagation models and physical hardware limit its performance, particularly across large fields of view. We present a compact differentiable model of a Fraunhofer holographic projector which...

Image quality enhancement for holographic display via dual-tilted phase light modulators

Texas Instruments Phase Light Modulators (TI-PLM) is a MEMS based device for modulating the phase of light. It plays an important role in computational holographic display. However, due to its relatively large pixel pitch (10.8 um for 0.67 VIS PLM) and limited phase modulating levels (16 levels), the image quality suff...

Hologram Representation via Quadratic Phase Gaussian Splatting

We introduce Complex-Valued Quadratic Phase Gaussian (CVQPG), a novel hologram representation method that augments each 2D Gaussian primitive with a quadratic phase profile controlled by a learnable curvature parameter. Against the planar Gaussian baseline, CVQPG improves the average PSNR of holographic reconstructions...

Angular-splitting hologram for high-quality eyebox expansion in near-eye displays.

The eyebox of holographic near-eye displays is fundamentally constrained by the limited space-bandwidth product of spatial light modulators. Conventional non-diffusive holograms trade a narrow eyebox for high-quality reconstruction, whereas diffusive holograms expand the eyebox through uncontrolled spreading at the exp...

Holographic display étendue expansion with a binary π-metasurface.

Holographic displays trade field of view against eyebox size because a spatial light modulator provides a fixed étendue. We pair a commercial 4-bit piston-mode phase light modulator (PLM) with a pixel-registered binary metasurface designed for an achromatic π phase step. Grouping the PLM into s×s superpixels while reta...
