Abstract

Today, stress and poor lifestyle choices are causing a rapid surge in physical and mental health issues such as hypertension, cardiovascular problems, sinusitis, and depression. As a significant yogic practice, Bhramari Pranayama positively impacts the autonomic nervous system and physiological processes. Objective – This review aims to assess the evidence-based impacts of Bhramari Pranayama on blood pressure, heart rate, vagal tone, endogenous nitric oxide (NO) production, EEG correlates, stress, depression, and wound healing. Methodology - The study analyzes data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cross-over trials, and network meta-analyses. Statistical parameters were evaluated using tools including sphygmomanometers, HRV monitors, EEGs, salivary tests, and vocal analysis. Result – The practice of Bhramari Pranayama decreases systolic and diastolic blood pressure and improves the resting heart rate.By producing vibrations in the nasal passages, Bhramari Pranayama substantially enhances nitric oxide (NO) vasodilation secretion, offering relief for chronic rhinosinusitis and elevating type-2 diabetes patients' salivary NO levels from 35.88 μmol/L up to 129.41 μmol/L. EEG recordings indicated a rise in theta (θ) and paroxysmal gamma (γ) brain activity, signifying deep psychological peace and inner happiness. In addition, it lowers cortisol and raises endorphins to alleviate fatigue and depression in multiple sclerosis sufferers and quickens recovery from surgical wounds. Conclusion – Bhramari Pranayama is a safe, inexpensive, and multifaceted complementary treatment that improves physical and mental health through the activation of the vagus nerve and the strengthening of the parasympathetic nervous system.
