Abstract

Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are among the most significant components of metabolic syndrome, exerting a critical impact on the morbidity, disability and mortality of the population. In recent years, bariatric interventions have come to be regarded not only as methods of weight loss, but also as effective means of achieving remission of T2DM. Various surgical techniques, such as sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion, have demonstrated high rates of glycated hemoglobin reduction, decreased need for hypoglycemic drugs, and stable diabetes remission. This article summarizes data from clinical studies, randomized controlled trials, and systematic reviews published in leading international databases in recent years, allowing for an evaluation of the efficacy and safety of bariatric surgery in patients with obesity and T2DM. Particular attention is paid to the factors influencing the treatment prognosis, as well as to current concepts regarding the mechanisms underlying the metabolic effects of surgical interventions.

Lifestyle Modification and Bariatric Surgery in Type 2 Diabetes Remission

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has traditionally been regarded as a chronic and progressively worsening disease. This paradigm is now challenged by evidence showing that remission is achievable in selected patients, particularly when interventions produce substantial and sustained weight loss. This narrative review sy...

Predictors of type 2 diabetes remission in patients with morbid obesity after bariatric surgery

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is a highly effective method of type 2 diabetes (T2D) treatment in patients with morbid obesity, but surgical outcomes are variable: some patients do not achieve remission of T2D, others may have insufficient weight loss or subsequent weight regain. Existing models for predicting diabet...

Long-Term Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Type 2 Diabetes: Mechanisms, Outcomes, and Clinical Implications: A Focused Review.

Metabolic/bariatric surgery is an effective intervention for people with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with benefits extending beyond weight loss. This focused review examines long-term glycemic outcomes after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), sleeve gastrectomy (SG), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB)...

Diabetes remission 10 years after bariatric surgery: Extension study of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) is highly effective for improving glycemic control in patients with severe obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), yet long-term evidence remains limited. Understanding the durability of remission and the mechanisms that sustain metabolic benefits is essential for guidin...

Diabetic Nephropathy is One of the Biggest Complications of Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus and obesity are two of the most important metabolic disorders worldwide, and their prevalence has increased considerably over the past few decades. Obesity, particularly excess visceral adiposity, is a major modifiable risk factor for the development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The relationshi...
