Dynamics of Reading Aloud in First (L1) and Second Languages (L2): A Comparative Analysis of Neurocognitive, Affective, and Production Effects

Jul 2026 · Rivista Italiana di Educazione Familiare · Vol 28, pp. 43-56 · 0 citations · 46 references

Abstract

Reading aloud can be understood as a dialogic and multimodal practice that engages phonological, prosodic, and auditory-feedback systems. Neuroimaging studies suggest activation of a predominantly left-hemisphere reading network, with additional executive-control demands often observed in second language (L2) contexts. In first language (L1) settings, readaloud practices have been associated with vocabulary development, prosodic sensitivity, and socio-emotional engagement; in L2 settings, their effects appear to depend more strongly on learner profiles, task design, and instructional scaffolding. The production effect may support recall in L1 and, when embedded in repeated and meaning-oriented practice, may also contribute to fluency and comprehension in L2. This article offers a narrative review of the literature on reading aloud in L1 and L2 contexts, integrating neurocognitive, affective, and mnemonic dimensions to outline pedagogical implications for inclusive language education.

From Modalities to Meaning: The Mediating Role of Integrative Saccades in L2 Reading of Picture Books

Abstract Picture books, which feature the display of both text and images, have been widely used in second language (L2) learning and teaching. During picture book reading, learners need to split their attention between text and images. This behavior is believed to be crucial in cross-modal integration of information t...

The Interplay of Task Type and Repetition in L2 Oral Performance and Attention Orientation: A Mixed-Methods Investigation

This mixed-methods study investigates how task type—independent versus integrated—and task repetition may influence the complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) of second language oral performance and learners’ underlying attention orientation. Fifty-six Iranian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners completed eit...

Limited L1 transfer and efficiency-driven strategies in L2 syntax–semantics processing: An ERP study

Cross-linguistic transfer accounts predict that second language (L2) learners benefit from structural overlap between their native language (L1) and L2, while the accessibility–complexity–efficiency model proposes that L2 learners rely on accessible cues to maintain efficiency when processing non-canonical structures w...
