This paper introduces a syllable-level UASR framework based on masked language modeling, which avoids the need for G2P and the instability of GAN-based methods and generalizes effectively to low-resource languages that have remained particularly difficult for prior methods.
Abstract
Training speech recognizers with unpaired speech and text -- known as unsupervised speech recognition (UASR) -- is a crucial step toward extending ASR to low-resource languages in the long-tail distribution and enabling multimodal learning from non-parallel data. However, existing approaches based on phones often rely on costly resources such as grapheme-to-phoneme converters (G2Ps) and struggle to generalize to languages with ambiguous phoneme boundaries due to training instability. In this paper, we address both challenges by introducing a syllable-level UASR framework based on masked language modeling, which avoids the need for G2P and the instability of GAN-based methods. Our approach achieves up to a 40\% relative reduction in character error rate (CER) on LibriSpeech and generalizes effectively to low-resource languages that have remained particularly difficult for prior methods. This method integrates the LMs directly into the parameters of an LLM-based ASR model, requiring no additional computational cost at inference, and consistently improved the ASR performance in the target domains, without degrading inference speed or memory footprint.
Empirical analyses show that MoSE improves high-, medium-, and low-resource languages simultaneously, with the largest gains on low-resource speech, thereby breaking the curse of multilinguality without compromising high-resource performance.

Comparing the ability of the Montreal Forced Aligner (MFA) and Wav2Vec-BERT 2.0 to produce word-level alignments for the low-resource variety Istro-Venetian, spoken in Croatia indicates that MFA significantly outperforms Wav2Vec-BERT 2.0 on forced alignment.

Speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) has advanced significantly with speech LLMs, offering the potential for joint optimization and preserving non-linguistic information. However, these models struggle with predicting high-bitrate speech tokens in LLMs, and face the challenge of relying on S2ST training data with ideall...
