Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of different concentrations of Catharanthus roseus leaf extract on the morphological characteristics of Dendrobium orchids. The research was conducted in the greenhouse of the Agronomy Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomised block design (CRBD) consisting of seven concentrations of C. roseus leaf extract: 0%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.15%, 0.2%, 0.25%, and 0.3%. Dendrobium orchid seedlings ready for acclimatisation were soaked in the extract solution for 15 minutes before planting. The observed parameters included plant height, plant diameter, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, number of roots, and stomatal density. Data were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the least significant difference (LSD) test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that C. roseus leaf extract significantly affected stomatal density but had no significant effect on plant height, plant diameter, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, or number of roots. Compared with the control (46.12 stomata mm⁻²), the extract reduced stomatal density, with the lowest value recorded for the 0.05% treatment (33.02 stomata mm⁻²). Overall, the application of C. roseus leaf extract reduced stomatal density in Dendrobium orchids during the acclimatisation phase.

ALLELOPATHIC EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS LEAF AND ROOT EXTRACTS OF Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. ON COWPEA GERMINATION AND EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH IN BAUCHI, NIGERIA

Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. is widely cultivated across semi-arid regions of Nigeria due to its rapid biomass accumulation and ecological adaptability. However, its residues may release allelochemicals that impede the performance of adjacent crops. This study evaluated the allelopathic influence of aqueous leaf and...

Bio-efficacy of Chromolaena odorata on the Agromorphological Parameters and Yield of Two Varieties of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) in Taabo, Southern Côte d’Ivoire

Chemical fertilisers can support crop production but may create environmental and accessibility concerns, prompting interest in locally available organic inputs. This study evaluated the effects of powdered material and aqueous extracts of Chromolaena odorata on the agromorphological performance and yield of Clemson sp...

Allelopathic effects of Hyptis suaveolens leaf extract on germination and early seedling growth of two local varieties (gero and dauro) of Pennisetum glaucum L.

Allelopathy is a biological phenomenon in which plants release chemical compounds that influence the germination, growth and development of neighboring plants. Hyptis suaveolens is an invasive aromatic species known to produce allelochemicals capable of suppressing the establishment of cultivated crops. This study eval...

Allelochemics impacts of leaf extracts from Vernonia amygdalina and Chromolaena odorata on germination of rice

Allelopathy from invasive and medicinal weeds can affect crop establishment, yet species- and concentration-specific impacts on rice remain poorly quantified. This study evaluated the concentration-dependent allelopathic effects of aqueous leaf extracts of Vernonia amygdalina Delile and Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M. Ki...
