Abstract

With the increase of the proportion of the renewables, the system inertia and frequency regulation capability in the sending-end power grid have become seriously insufficient, making the frequency stability issue increasingly prominent. This paper proposes a two-layer emergency frequency control scheme for sending-end power grid with multi-energy storage systems (MESSs) to enhance the frequency stability. At the upper layer, the total power control commands of MESSs are optimized to minimize the control energy consumption, considering the constraints of frequency and control power. It achieves the optimal utilization of energy. At the lower layer, the power commands of each ESS are solved by the model predictive controller (MPC), with the objective of minimizing the loss cost and sate of charge (SOC) deviation of ESS, considering the operating characteristics of different ESS. It achieves the reasonable distribution of power. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme are verified in IEEE-39 bus system. The results show that the proposed scheme can effectively enhance the system frequency stability for the sending-end system.

Frequency regulation strategy for wind-storage systems based on improved torque limit control

With a high proportion of wind power connected to the power grid, the decline of system inertia leads to the increasingly prominent problem of frequency stability. Because of the limited kinetic energy of the rotor, wind turbines are prone to causing secondary frequency drop when participating in frequency regulation...

Research on Virtual Synchronous Machine Control of Air Conditioner Loads Participating in Power Frequency Regulation

High penetration of renewable energy reduces power-system inertia and increases the need for fast-frequency-support resources. This study proposes an integrated virtual synchronous machine (VSM) control framework for clusters of variable-frequency air conditioners (VFACs). The proposed method incorporates synchronous-m...

Adaptive voltage reference regulation for grid-connected MMCs based on P–V characteristics

When the modular multilevel converter is connected to the grid, the voltage reference command issued by the dispatching system to the MMC is updated at 15-min intervals, but the rapid fluctuation of the DC side power can be close to a few seconds. This kind of phenomenon leads to the mismatch of time scale between th...
