The 21st century will present many challenges for equipment management; one strategy will be to focus on sustaining equipment and its functions. Proper equipment management and adherence to maintenance protocols—or the restoration of operational conditions—prevent failures and ensure the equipment’s productive capacity. In the power generation and oil industries, the current trend is to reduce maintenance operating costs by 35% and mitigate the adverse impact of downtime, which increases by 300%.

Modern industrial electronic and electrical systems—converters, controllers, and electric motor drives among them—are exposed to electrical, mechanical, and thermal stresses that can lead to unexpected failures, production losses, and, in the worst cases, safety and environmental incidents [...]
Based on annual railcar repair reports, the probabilities of various automatic coupling failures are calculated, and a railcar decommissioning trend is plotted, with a forecast for the next three years. Modern diagnostic methods for automatic coupling devices, as well as surfacing methods for restoring worn parts, are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of surfacing methods are analyzed.
