Modeling and analyzing the performance of IoT systems using IoTSim-Edge: a comparative study of data transfer protocols

Abstract

In this paper, a study of the capabilities of the IoTSim-Edge simulation environment for analyzing the performance of IoT systems in the context of edge computing is presented. An experimental comparison of the MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP protocols was conducted in terms of response time, transmission reliability, and energy efficiency. The experimental results show that MQTT provides stable performance with an average response time of 42.0 ms and 100% packet delivery reliability in a network of twelve IoT devices. CoAP demonstrated 40.6% faster response time (22.7 ms) and 68.3% higher throughput, while consuming 9.9% less energy compared to MQTT. HTTP exhibited significantly lower performance with response times of approximately 4.91 seconds, limiting its applicability in real-time IoT scenarios. The study confirms that IoTSim-Edge is an effective tool for evaluating IoT infrastructure performance without physical hardware deployment.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

Introducing Quine: An AI research system designed for the complexity of biology

Biology doesn't operate in silos, and neither should the AI representation of it. Quine is an early-stage research effort to create a multimodal world model of biology. By connecting insights across biological scales and modalities, Quine helps scientists computationally search a space far larger than intuition allows and prioritize hypotheses before they reach the lab. Experimental results provide important feedback, helping researchers sharpen future research directions. The post Introducing Q…
