Results showed that reduced SaMYB106 expression weakened the purple color of S. americanum fruits and decreased anthocyanin content, suggesting that this gene may promote anthocyanin production in fruits.
Abstract
Simple Summary Fruit color is an important trait for understanding and utilizing plants. Anthocyanins are natural pigments that give many plant fruits their red, purple, and other colors. However, the key genes that control fruit color formation remain poorly understood in many wild plants. Solanum americanum is a wild species of the genus Solanum with potential nutritional and medicinal value. Its mature fruits show a distinct purple color, but the genetic basis underlying fruit coloration remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed genes potentially associated with fruit color formation in S. americanum and identified SaMYB106 as a candidate gene associated with purple fruit coloration. The results showed that reduced SaMYB106 expression weakened the purple color of S. americanum fruits and decreased anthocyanin content, suggesting that this gene may promote anthocyanin production in fruits. This study improves our understanding of fruit color formation in wild Solanum plants and provides a basis for identifying and utilizing genes related to fruit color.
Rind color is an important quality trait in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). As a core transcription factor in plant pigment biosynthesis, APRR2 plays a conserved yet mechanistically diverse regulatory role in the formation of rind color in various vegetables. However, the APRR2 transcription factor regulates rind color but...

Background UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) catalyze the glycosylation of anthocyanins and are key enzymes affecting anthocyanin stability and petal coloration. However, the evolutionary characteristics of the UGT family and its regulatory roles in flower color development remain poorly understood in woody ornamental pl...

Phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs) are a family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors that serve as central integrators of light signaling and developmental programs. Although PIFs have been well characterized in model species, their genome-wide landscape in blueberry (Vaccinium duclouxii) and the...

Anthocyanins determine the appearance and nutritional quality of sweet cherries, yet their transport mechanism remains largely unclear. Here, we performed a genome-wide identification of the MATE family in sweet cherry and characterized two key anthocyanin-related transporters. A total of 54 PavMATE genes were identi...

LA0247 (S. neorickii) has great potential to improve fruit quality and abiotic stress tolerances in cultivated tomato and a set of the valuable novel germplasm resources has been developed in this study, of great value for simultaneously enhancing fruit quality and stress tolerance in tomatoes.
Cassava produces starch-filled tubers which are a crucial food source for many people, especially in Africa. This plant species is famous for drought tolerance and resilience, but changing conditions due to climate change require genetic improvements to ensure sustainable cassava cultivation. In this context, a compreh...
