Retrospective analysis of tuberculosis incidence in children and adolescents of Poltava region in 2019–2023

Abstract

Purpose. The aim of the study was to assess the incidence of tuberculosis among children and adolescents in Ukraine and Poltava region in 2019–2023. Materials and methods. Methods: a systematic approach and analysis, a bibliosemantic method, a medical-statistical method. Materials: analytical and statistical reference books “Tuberculosis in Ukraine” for 2019–2023 from the State Institution “Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine”. Results. In Poltava region, the growth rate of the indicator in all age groups is positive, the incidence is at an average level compared to other regions, but incidence is increasing, the largest increase was observed in the age group 15–17 years, this figure in 2023 was twice as high as the national one. The prevalence of all active forms of tuberculosis among different age groups decreased in all regions and in Ukraine, the rate in Poltava region is at an average level compared to others, but exceeded the national rate for all years of the study period. Among children the rate in the 0–14 age group for all years of the study period was significantly lower than the corresponding indicator in Ukraine, in the 0–17 age group it was close to the national one, with an excess in 2022. Conclusions. The analysis of the incidence of tuberculosis among children and adolescents we determined that in Poltava region the incidence of tuberculosis is increasing, the largest increase was observed in the age group of 15–17 years, and in the same age group there was a significant exceeding the national prevalence of active forms of tuberculosis. In addition, the prevalence of active forms of tuberculosis exceeded the national rate for the entire study period.

Analysis of the epidemiological situation regarding tuberculosis among children and adolescents in the Irkutsk Region (2020–2024)

Objective. To classify the municipalities of Irkutsk Region based on the level of tuberculosis (TB) epidemiological situation in children and adolescents. Materials and м ethods. An assessment of clinical-epidemiological indicators of TB was conducted in 33 municipalities of Irkutsk Region in children, adolescents and adult, using data from forms No. 8 and No. 33 of the Federal Statistical Observation for 2020–2024, employing cluster analysis. Results. A decline in TB incidence and prevalence is observed across all age groups in the Irkutsk Region, alongside uneven coverage of immunodiagnostics and fluorographic screening. Three groups of medical organizations in the Irkutsk Region were identified, differing in the incidence rates among children (p = 0.02) and the adult population (p < 0.001), including cases involving bacterial excretion (p < 0.001), lung destruction (p < 0.001), and fibro-cavernous TB (p < 0.001), as well as in TB mortality rates (p = 0.02). Differences were also noted regarding the proportion of children who completed a course of chemoprophylaxis (p = 0.04) and the average number of contacts identified at infection foci (p = 0.04).

Epidemiological pattern of tuberculosis in Babol City, northern Iran (2015-2021)

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to persist being the most important cause of death and disability in developing countries. Prioritizing the analysis of the current situation is the most effective approach to managing and intervening in any health issue. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the epidemiological patterns of TB in Babol City over seven years. Methods: This study was performed from 2015 to 2021. For data collection, the information of all cases of TB patients registered in the system of the Tuberculosis Inventory of the health department of Babol Medical Sciences was examined. Results: A total of 307 individuals diagnosed with TB were included in the study. More than 60 percent were under 50 years old and the highest number was observed in the 30-39 years old age group. Most of the patients were males (67.4%) and more than 90% were new cases of TB. 73.9% were pulmonary patients and 85.9% were smear-positive. The prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) had a notable decline, dropping from 7.05 per 100,000 individuals in 2015 to 5.26 per 100,000 individuals in 2021, which indicates a significant decreasing trend (P=0.012). Besides, there was a relationship between the type of disease (pulmonary/non-pulmonary) and age, gender, BMI, case of disease and history of TB-related hospitalization (p<0.05). Conclusion: The trends and factors identified in this study can enhance public awareness, reduce risk factors, and support effective patient screening programs. Additionally, these findings can help health policymakers assess regional disease status and develop future strategies.

Temporal Trends in Tuberculosis Prevalence and Burden in Iran, 1992–2022: A 30-Year Analysis

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most significant public health challenges, and monitoring its long-term trends is essential for evaluating the effectiveness of disease control programs. This study aimed to assess the 30-year trend of TB prevalence and disease burden in Iran from 1994 to 2023. Methods: This ecological descriptive study was conducted using data from the Global Burden of Disease study. Indicators of TB prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Iran, the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and globally were extracted and analyzed as age-standardized rates per 100,000 population. Temporal trends were assessed using the Joinpoint regression model and the average annual percent change (AAPC), with a significance level set at 0.05. Results: The findings indicated a decreasing trend in both DALYs and TB prevalence, with AAPCs of −4.50 and −0.39, respectively (P <0.001). In subgroups, both DALYs and prevalence of drug-susceptible TB showed declining trends, whereas multidrug-resistant TB and extensively drug-resistant TB demonstrated increasing trends (P <0.001). Conclusion: Although the overall burden of TB in Iran has declined over the past three decades, the rising trend of drug-resistant forms highlights the continued need for strengthened early detection, surveillance of drug resistance, and targeted treatment strategies.

Epidemiological profile and temporal trend of hospitalizations for malignant skin neoplasms in Brazil between 2015 and 2025

This study analyzed the epidemiological profile and temporal trend of hospitalizations for malignant skin neoplasms in Brazil between 2015 and 2025, based on secondary data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS). A total of 633,457 hospitalizations were recorded during the period, with a predominance of male sex (51.9%), self-declared White individuals (65.8%), and the age group of 60 years or older (72.3%). The Southeast and South regions concentrated the highest number of hospitalizations, while the North region presented the highest mortality rate (4.70%). A general upward trend was observed throughout the historical series, with a reduction in 2020 and a progressive recovery in subsequent years. The findings indicate a higher occurrence of hospitalizations in groups more vulnerable to cumulative ultraviolet radiation exposure and evidence regional inequalities in access to diagnosis and treatment, reinforcing the need for prevention strategies, early diagnosis, and strengthening of public health policies.
