Abstract

The impact of compensation packages on organisations has continued to draw attention of organizational policy makers and scholars. This study examined the relationship between compensation packages and organizational sustainability in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) between 2014 to 2025. The study was instituted to achieve a specific objective. The Resource-Based View (RBV) was adopted as the analytical guide. The descriptive research design was employed as an approach. The study population comprised 615 managerial, permanent, and contract staff of the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries. A sample size of 242 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, while Bowley’s proportional allocation and stratified random sampling techniques were employed. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire validated by experts, while the instrument yielded a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.87, confirming its reliability. Out of the 242 questionnaires administered, 220 valid copies were retrieved and analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27, while Spearman Rank Order Correlation was employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that respondents agreed that competitive salaries, performance-based incentives, equitable reward systems, and comprehensive monetary and non-monetary benefits significantly enhanced employee motivation, commitment, retention, and productivity, thereby promoting organizational sustainability. The hypothesis test further revealed a strong positive and statistically significant relationship between compensation packages and organizational sustainability (r = 0.733, p = 0.000), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. The study concluded that competitive and equitable compensation packages are essential for improving workforce stability, reducing employee turnover, enhancing productivity, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of NNPCL. The study recommended that NNPCL should periodically review its compensation structure to ensure alignment with industry standards and employee expectations.

Factors Influencing the Adoption of Environmental Sustainability Practices in Selected Petroleum Industries in Southeastern Nigeria

This study examined the organisational and regulatory factors influencing the adoption of environmental sustainability practices in selected petroleum industries in Southeast Nigeria. The petroleum sector remains economically important, but its operations are associated with environmental concerns that require stronger sustainability responses. A cross-sectional survey research design and quantitative approach were adopted. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to employees and management personnel in selected oil and gas companies. A total of 420 questionnaires were distributed, 392 were retrieved, and 384 valid responses were used for analysis, representing a valid completion rate of 91.4%. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation, as well as multiple regression analysis. The findings showed high agreement with organisational factors, regulatory factors and environmental sustainability adoption, with mean scores of 4.23, 4.07 and 3.95, respectively. The regression results indicated that organisational factors had a significant positive effect on environmental sustainability adoption (β = 0.45, t = 9.62, p < 0.05). Regulatory factors also had a significant positive influence on adoption (β = 0.37, t = 7.88, p < 0.05). The model explained 58.0% of the variation in environmental sustainability adoption. The study concludes that internal organisational support and consistent regulatory oversight are important for improving sustainability practices in petroleum firms.

Training and organizational performance of manufacturing firms in Rivers State, Nigeria

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between training and organizational performance of manufacturing firms in Rivers State, Nigeria, specifically focusing on how employee skill development and continuous learning influence operational and productivity performance. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted for the investigation. The accessible population consisted of 580 employees drawn from selected manufacturing firms in Rivers State, from which a sample size of 237 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane (1967) formula. A stratified random sampling technique was utilized to ensure balanced representation across the firms. Data collection was executed using structured questionnaire, yielding 212 validly retrieved copies, which represents an 89.5% response rate. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed as the methods of data analysis. The empirical findings revealed that employee skill development exerts a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship with both operational performance and productivity performance. Similarly, continuous learning has a positive and significant influence on operational performance and productivity performance. Together, these dimensions explain 55.3% of the variance in operational performance and 61.9% of the variance in productivity performance. The study concludes that training is a critical, non-negotiable driver of organizational performance, confirming Human Capital Theory premises that transforming raw labour into highly specialized human assets directly mitigates production inefficiencies. Consequently, it is recommended that manufacturing firms should institute mandatory floor-level workshops focusing on advanced machinery operations and strict quality control protocols.
