Abstract

Background: Lung cancer is a common malignancy and an important cause of cancer-related mortality. Institutional data from Eastern Nepal are limited. Materials and Methods: A descriptive hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Clinical Oncology Department of Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital, Biratnagar, Nepal. Records of 50 confirmed lung cancer patients registered from January 2023 to December 2023 were reviewed. Data were retrieved from the oncology registry and hospital medical records and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The mean age was 63.6 ± 11.3 years, with a median age of 68 years (range 27-79 years). Males and females were equally represented (25 each, 50.0%). Stage IV disease was observed in 30 (60.0%) patients and Stage III disease in 20 (40.0%) patients. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological subtype (22, 44.0%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (16, 32.0%) and small cell carcinoma (4, 8.0%). Smoking history was present in 35 (70.0%) patients. Conclusion: Lung cancer patients attending Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital predominantly presented at advanced stages, and adenocarcinoma was the leading histological subtype.

The correlation between clinical and pathological features of renal cancer patients with survival after surgical intervention

Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a prevalent malignancy with a steadily increasing incidence. This study examined the association between clinical and pathological factors and RCC patient survival outcomes. Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients diagnosed with malignant renal tumors who underwent surgical resection at Urmia Imam Khomeini Hospital between April 2017 and March 2022. Eligible patients were identified through a review of medical records and recruited using a convenience sampling method. Demographic, clinical, and pathological data were collected for each patient. Results: Of the 171 patients, 104 were males and 67 were females with a mean age of 57.9 years (SD±14.5). The one-, three, and five-year overall survival rates were 84.7%, 72.4%, and 70.5%, respectively. Univariate regression analysis revealed that five-year mortality following surgical intervention was strongly associated with moderate-to-severe anemia HR: 6.495, 95%CI: 3.618-11.660, p<0.001), elevated ESR (HR: 6.690, 95%CI: 3.122-14.335, p<0.001), presence of necrosis (HR 13.216, 95% CI 5.213-33.509, p < 0.001), and lymphovascular invasion (HR 7.988, 95% CI 4.184-15.251, p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis identified moderate-to-severe anemia, lymphovascular invasion, and stage III &IV, high ESR and eGFR<45 as strong predictors of five-year mortality. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of considering clinical and pathological features in the management and prognosis of RCC patients.

Treatment and outcomes of people with bladder cancer in Armenia: a retrospective hospital-based study

Bladder cancer (BC) is the fifth most common cancer by incidence in Armenia, with 500– 550 new cases diagnosed every year. For this retrospective hospital-based study, we collected data during the period 01 January 2010–01 January 2023 from three main oncology centres in Armenia: ‘Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center’, ‘Mikaelyan Institute of Surgery’ and “Muratsan” Hospital Complex of Yerevan State Medical University. Statistical analysis was conducted on 01 November 2023. Eighty-seven patients with BC treated during the mentioned period in these three hospitals were included in the final analysis. The male-to-female ratio was 8.6:1. Median age at diagnosis was 65 years. About 5.7% of patients had stage I, 17.2% stage II, 47.1% stage III, 25.3% stage IV BC and for 4.6% of patients, the stage was unknown. Among stage IV patients, the most common metastasis sites were lungs (36.4%), followed by non-regional lymph nodes (31.8%). Median overall survival (mOS) was 31 months for the entire cohort. An mOS was 62 months for stage II, 40 months for stage III and 14 months for stage IV patients. While overall survival for stages II–III, BC was higher than for the metastatic stage; this difference was not statistically significant (40 versus 14 months; p = 0.11). Around 61% of patients received first-line chemotherapy with cisplatin and 33.3% with carboplatin. In people with stage II–III BC, an mOS was significantly better for those treated with cisplatin-containing regimens, compared with those treated with carboplatin-containing regimens (40 versus 16 months; p = 0.021), while in stage IV, this difference was not statistically significant (30 versus 14 months; p = 0.269). In conclusion, this retrospective study with a relatively small number of patients has shown that the survival of patients with metastatic BC in Armenia is poor, with an mOS just surpassing 1 year. We believe that the implementation of newer drugs, like immunotherapy and antibody-drug conjugates, may improve outcomes.

Clinicopathological Spectrum, Molecular Subtypes, and Contemporary Treatment Patterns of Breast Cancer in Bangladesh

Longer symptom duration was associated with larger tumor size, and larger tumor size was significantly associated with nodal positivity, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, timely referral, and breast cancer awareness programs to improve clinical outcomes.

Clinical Features and Etiology of Patients Having Advanced Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma on Initial Presentation

Background: In underdeveloped nations, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often identified at an advanced stage and is one of the major causes of cancer-related mortality globally. The aim of this study was to determine clinical characteristics and etiologies in patients presenting with late-stage HCC. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, from 11th July 2025 to 11th January, 2026. The number of patients enrolled was 107, aged 18-70 years, and consecutively sampled from advanced-stage HCC. The diagnosis was confirmed on computed tomography (CT) scanning in three phases. Clinical, lab, and radiological parameters were documented. The severity of the disease was assessed using the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging and Child-Pugh classification. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 25. Results: The mean age of patients was 58.1 ± 10.8 years, and 72.9% were male. Jaundice (p=0.039), ascites (p=0.028), and hepatomegaly (p=0.047) were significantly associated with portal vein thrombosis. Additionally, there was a significant association between HBV infection and a higher stage of the disease (p=0.021). Conclusions: Chronic viral hepatitis, especially HCV infection, was the primary risk factor in this group of patients for advanced-stage HCC. The majority had marked hepatic impairment and an advanced stage of the disease, which is an indication of the need for better surveillance, early hepatopathy screening, and timely intervention measures to minimize late-stage presentation and hepatopathy-related mortality.

Cancer Distribution in an Oncology Outpatient Clinic in Eastern Türkiye: A 1-Year Retrospective Study

Female patients predominated slightly, and the incidence of gastric and esophageal cancers was significantly higher than reported in the literature, suggesting that regional environmental, dietary, and sociocultural factors play a critical role in shaping cancer distribution across the Eastern Anatolia region.
