Four new species of Pristimantis myersi group (Anura: Craugastoridae) from Carchi, Ecuador: cryptic diversity in unique and threatened high-Andean ecosystems
This study describes four new species of frogs in the genus Pristimantis, belonging to the myersi group, and represents the first attempt to link the distribution of these species with the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation cover in Carchi, showing a net loss of more than 9,000 hectares between 1985 and 2022.
Abstract
The high-Andean ecosystems of the northern Andes rank among the most diverse and endemic regions on the planet. This study describes four new species of frogs in the genus Pristimantis, belonging to the myersi group. The four new species were discovered through 6 years of fieldwork (2016–2021) as part of doctoral research integrating morphological, bioacoustic, ecological, and molecular data. Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) support the recognition of each taxon as a distinct species of Pristimantis, known for its cryptic diversity and restricted distribution. Additionally, we document changes in vegetation cover across the habitats where these species occur, underscoring the fragility of their ecosystems. This study represents the first attempt to link the distribution of these species with the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation cover in Carchi, showing a net loss of more than 9,000 hectares between 1985 and 2022, particularly in the western Andean foothills. Finally, our findings uncover the previously undocumented biological richness of Carchi Province and highlight the urgent need to conserve its unique and threatened high-Andean ecosystems.
Areas of endemism are geographic units characterized by unique biological diversity and evolutionary histories, enabling the formulation of hypotheses about the processes shaping regional ecosystems. Aquatic insects are essential components of freshwater environments, and the genus Ranatra Fabricius, 1790 is commonly f...

The Pacific slope of the Ecuadorian Andes and the adjacent Chocó lowlands represent one of the most diverse habitats for orchids, characterized by high levels of endemism and a significant number of species that remain undescribed. This underscores the persistent gaps in our current botanical knowledge of this region....

Amphipods are abundant in freshwater ecosystems, where they play a crucial role in key processes such as organic matter decomposition. However, their diversity and spatial distribution remain poorly known due to the prevalence of cryptic species. This study investigates the genetic diversity of gammarids (Gammaridae)...

A new species of the genus Diaphanes Motschulsky, 1853, Diaphanes guangwushanensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Guangwushan Mountain in Sichuan, China. This study provides the molecular identification standard, based on the Cox1 sequence, and habitat photograph of the species. This species is characterize...
Abstract This study presents a taxonomic revision of Bunodophoron in New Caledonia. Extensive fieldwork was conducted in the region, particularly in the montane rainforests of Grande Terre. An integrative approach was employed, in which specimens underwent morphological assessment, chemical analysis via thin-layer chro...

Lake Tanganyika harbours an exceptionally diverse fauna of cichlids that has arisen through explosive adaptive radiation. During a recent survey at Kasenga and Kombe, Zambia, we discovered an undescribed species of the genus Neolamprologus. The new species is readily distinguished from its congeners by its uniquely dev...
