Features of the Perception of Russian Toponyms by Chinese Students: Cognitive and Psychological Aspects

Aug 2026 · Bulletin of Science and Practice · Vol 12, pp. 581-588 · 0 citations

Abstract

The perception of Russian toponyms by Chinese learners often brings the logic of spatial partitioning and linguocultural knowledge into conflict with practical speech application. This study systematizes the associative, emotional-evaluative, and phonetic-graphic features of Russian toponym acquisition by Chinese speakers. Theoretically, it draws on A. A. Leontiev’s psycholinguistic theory of speech activity, cognitive linguistics, and the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. A directed associative experiment with 56 Chinese students (B1–B2) utilized ten high-frequency Russian toponyms as stimuli. The four-stage procedure included recording three associations, audio-recording pronunciation, a structured interview, and processing 1,680 reactions via content analysis, psycholinguistic commentary, and phonetic observation. The findings indicate that the core of associative fields consists of textbook stereotypes. Toponyms with vivid natural imagery are perceived most positively. Systematic articulatory difficulties and a notable influence of hieroglyphic transcription were identified; the latter generates quasi-etymologies and distorts cultural semantics. Articulatory difficulties heighten cognitive tension and trigger speech reduction of toponyms. Based on these results, a linguodidactic model is proposed, featuring a three-component toponym introduction (phonetics, cultural commentary, and comparison with hieroglyphic transcription), the targeted development of an emotional component, a bilingual associative dictionary, and the systematic use of hieroglyphic transcription for metalinguistic reflection. The model aims at building comprehensive toponymic competence by integrating the cognitive styles and evaluative strategies of Chinese learners.

RUSSIAN-CHECHEN BILINGUALISM: SPEECH BEHAVIOUR STRATEGIES AND SELF-IDENTIFICATION

Abstract. The relevance of the study is determined by the insufficient knowledge of the sociolinguistic aspects of Russian-Chechen bilingualism, particularly the speech behavior strategies of speakers and their connection to ethno-cultural self-identification. The aim of the paper is to identify and describe these strategies through the analysis of interference, code-switching, and metalinguistic reflection. The methodology includes field data collection: monologues from 20 informants of different ages and social statuses from the Chechen Republic were recorded and transcribed. The analysis employed discourse analysis, content analysis, linguistic description, and elements of quantitative statistics. The results revealed that structural interference in the speech of active speakers is minimal, while code-switching serves as a conscious pragmatic strategy performing nominative, quotative, and emotional-evaluative functions. Metalinguistic statements unequivocally indicate the perception of the Chechen language as a fundamental basis of ethnic identity, inextricably linked to the value system of “ghillak-özdangalla” (customs and etiquette). Based on dominant speech practices, three types of bilinguals were identified: “keepers of traditions”, “adaptive bilinguals”, and “historical storytellers”. The conclusions emphasize the high vitality of the Chechen language and its stabilizing role, which is of practical importance for developing educational programs and language policy in multi-ethnic regions.

ADJECTIVES WITH THE MEANING OF «HUMAN APPEARANCE» IN RUSSIAN AND ARABIC

The article presents a comparative analysis of semantic and functional features of adjectives describing human appearance in Russian and Arabic. The study examines the linguocultural aspects of representing physical characteristics through adjectival vocabulary. The aim is to identify national and cultural specifics of verbalizing appearance in the compared linguocultures. The scientific novelty lies in the systematic description of this lexicalsemantic group from the perspective of intercultural communication. It is established that the Russian adjectival system is characterized by a predominance of neutral-descriptive function with an emphasis on analytical description of anthropometric parameters. Arabic linguoculture demonstrates syncretism of aesthetic and ethical evaluation, where physical characteristics are inextricably linked with moral qualities of the individual. Fundamental differences in functional-semantic dominants, categorization principles, gender specification and axiological components are revealed. The research results have practical significance for translation theory and practice, teaching Russian and Arabic as foreign languages, and for developing intercultural communication.

ANORMATIVITY IN THE PROCESS OF MASTERING THE LATIN LANGUAGE AND MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY: LINGUISTIC, PSYCHOLINGUISTIC, AND LINGUODIDACTIC DIMENSIONS

The work is a fragment of the research project «Medical Discourse as an Object of Comprehensive Analysis: Linguistics, Linguodidactics, Intercultural Communication, Literary Studies» (state registration number: 0124U001310). The aim of the study is to provide a systematic analysis of linguistic and speech‑ related deviations from normative usage identiՔed in the process of mastering Latin medical terminology by future physicians, to determine the psycholinguistic and linguodidactic causes of their occurrence, and to outline ways of preventing and minimizing them. The relevance of the topic is determined by the need to improve the level of professional linguistic competence of future physicians and the necessity to enhance the methodology of teaching medical Latin. The methodological basis of the study includes linguistic, psycholinguistic, and linguodidactic approaches, as well as analysis, synthesis, systematization, generalization, observation, contrastive analysis, and structural‑ semantic analysis. The research results revealed the main types of abnormalities, identiՔed the causes of their occurrence, and determined the role of interlanguage interference and cognitive mechanisms in the formation of errors. It has been substantiated that the analysis of abnormalities is an important tool not only for improving the methodology of teaching medical Latin, but also for gaining a deeper understanding of the processes of acquiring professional terminology. The conclusions demonstrate the necessity of a comprehensive approach to preventing abnormalities in the learning process. Based on the research Քndings, a system of methodological recommendations aimed at preventing and minimizing typical errors has been proposed. Prospects for further research related to the study of cognitive mechanisms underlying the generation of abnormalities, as well as the in̪uence of the digital language environment and AI on the formation of professional speech among medical students, have been outlined.

Associative research in teaching Russian as a foreign language

The article is devoted to the description of the methodology for applying the results of associative experiments in the classroom of the Russian language as the most effective approaches to the formation of linguocultural competence of students who master Russian as a non-native language through the system of basic values. The methodology proposed by the authors is based on a wide range of modern linguodidactic and psycholinguistic studies of linguistic consciousness and the formation of value priorities (basic values) among the modern youth of sovereign Kazakhstan. Language teaching is a linguodidactic problem, which is studied considering the principles of pedagogical competence, which, in turn, determines the search for didactic conditions and ways of developing linguocultural competence. Objectifying the idea of the effectiveness and necessity of considering and using associative materials in teaching language as a linguocultural phenomenon and a carrier of the archetypes of the linguistic consciousness of an ethnos, the authors turn to the texts of works of art. The authors propose the use of materials of associative research and associative dictionaries for didactic purposes in the learning process

Sensitive Areas of Language: Taboos and Euphemization of the Concept of “Woman” in English, Russian and Kazakh Linguistic Cultures

The article explores the linguistic mechanisms of tabooing and euphemization associated with the concept of “woman” in Kazakh, Russian, and English. The relevance of this topic lies in the fact that gender-marked vocabulary intersects with cultural prohibitions, etiquette norms, and cognitive schemas that influence the choice of speech strategies. Thus, studying the ways in which women’s physiological, age-related, and social realities are named and replaced, allows us to clarify the interaction between language, culture and thought. The purpose of the study is to identify the semantic, cognitive and pragmatic parameters of euphemistic and tabooed units in a comparative aspect. The work includes the following areas: analysis of lexico-semantic models of euphemization, reconstruction of frames and cultural scenarios, comparison of literary and corpus material, identification of universal and specific strategies in three linguistic cultures. The novelty of the research is determined by the combination of cognitive-framework analysis with corpus and discourse methodologies, as well as a focus on women’s issues as a sensitive linguistic and cultural area. The material includes literary texts J. Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”, M. Bulgakov’s “The Master and Margarita” (“Мастер и Маргарита” ), and A. Nurpeissov’s “Blood and Sweat” (“Қан мен тер”), corpus resources (BNC, COCA, NCRL, National Corpus of the Kazakh language). It has been established that English predominantly uses metaphorization and periphrases (for example,  expecting, those days  ), while Kazakh demonstrates socio-role and etiquette strategies (e.g.  аяғы ауыр, ұятты сөз  ). In both languages, euphemization is particularly active in the domains of physiology, age, and social roles. The results obtained confirm both the universality of the physiological content delineation and the cultural specificity of the methods of speech euphemization. The practical significance is related to the possibility of using data in intercultural communication, teaching foreign languages, lexicography, translation studies, and NLP tasks for processing sensitive vocabulary.

Analysis of Lexical Errors in the Chinese Language Learning by Russian-Speaking Students and Pedagogical Ways to Overcome Them

The purpose of the study is to identify systemic patterns in the lexical errors made by Russian-speaking Chi-nese language learners followed by the development of scientifically sound teaching strategies that allow to reduce the frequency of errors in students’ speech. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time, based on the material of more than 200 erroneous sentences found in the course of the overt observation of the speech from students of elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels, a multidimensional classification of lexical errors (artificially created words, mixing of meanings, combinational disturbance, omissions, and substitutions, semantic errors, errors in fused-separate verbs) was carried out and the causes of their uprise were identified, with consideration of both interlanguage interference (native and first foreign languages) and linguistic system inner factors. The complex analysis of the types of lexical errors and the causes of their oc-curance have been implemented. The methodological recommendations for teachers, which usage is ap-pealled to make the students’ work with lexical material less hard.
