Abstract

This study examines the multidimensional impacts of rapid urban sprawl in Erbil, Northern Iraq, a city that experienced substantial built-up area expansion after 2000. Employing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling ( PLS-SEM ) with survey data from 1,200 residents across seven concentric ring zones, we investigate how sprawl affects urban form quality, environmental conditions, transportation accessibility, infrastructure services, and overall quality of life. Results reveal significant positive relationships between perceived sprawl and urban form quality ( β = 0.638), environmental quality ( β = 0.751), infrastructure services ( β = 0.669), and transportation accessibility ( β = 0.859). Multi-group analysis demonstrates that peripheral zones experience approximately 45% stronger negative effects compared to central areas. The model explains 41% of quality-of-life variance, providing empirical evidence for implementing urban growth boundaries and prioritizing green infrastructure in rapidly expanding Middle Eastern cities shaped by rentier state dynamics.

Decoding the Sprawl Paradigm: How New Building Typologies Shape Energy Consumption and Environmental Degradation in Erbil, Iraq

The city of Erbil, Iraq, has expanded physically far faster than its population since 2003. This sprawl has accompanied an abrupt shift from traditional horizontal typologies — courtyard houses (mal-i hewshidar) and low-rise villas -toward high-rise apartments. A Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of multi-te...

Drivers of Urban Sprawl Along River Rupingazi Ecosystem, Embu County, Kenya

Urban sprawl is commonly associated with the outward expansion of built-up areas into peripheral and environmentally sensitive locations. This study examined the drivers of urban sprawl toward the Rupingazi riverine zone in Embu Municipality, Kenya, and assessed associated land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes between...

Development of a Trip Generation Model for Rapidly Transforming African Cities: The Case Study of Upper Hill, Nairobi

Rapid urban transformation in commercial centers has intensified travel demand, necessitating context-specific approaches to trip generation analysis. This study develops a localized, empirically validated framework to examine how land use characteristics and socioeconomic factors influence trip generation patterns in...

SPATIAL DYNAMICS OF URBAN SPRAWL AND THE CHALLENGES OF TRANSBOUNDARY GOVERNANCE IN BOGOR’S PERI-URBAN

Bogor City, as a satellite of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area, is experiencing demographic pressure and rapid urbanization. This growth has triggered massive spillover effects, manifesting as urban sprawl beyond administrative boundaries into the outskirts of Bogor Regency. This study aims to analyze the spatial dynamics...

Assessing Urban Sprawl Sustainability through a Composite Compactness–Connectivity Index: Evidence from Erbil, Iraq

Urban sprawl, marked by low-density development, fragmented land use, and automobile-dependent growth, remains a critical barrier to sustainable urban planning. This study develops the Sprawl Centrality Index (SCI), a composite diagnostic tool that integrates spatial compactness with network connectivity to evaluat...

From Spatial Form to Lived Urban Performance: A Hierarchical PLS-SEM Analysis of Perceived Design-Related Attributions for Neighborhood Satisfaction in a Hot-Climate Pilgrimage City

Urban design quality is often assessed through the presence or appearance of physical features, although residents experience design through what spatial form enables in everyday life. This study develops and tests a lived urban performance model explaining how perceived urban design quality is associated with perceive...
