Integrating Local Values into Curriculum Design: A Critical Educational Perspective
Abstract
This study critically examines the integration of local values into curriculum design at SMP X in Jayapura, Papua. A qualitative case study was conducted during one academic semester involving ten informants consisting of one principal, four teachers, four students, and one indigenous community leader. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, focus group discussions, and document analysis, then analyzed thematically. The novelty of this study lies in identifying symbolic, contextual, and substantive levels of local value integration. The findings show that local values were mainly presented through cultural activities and local examples, while their inclusion in learning objectives, teaching strategies, and assessment remained limited. The study highlights the need for systematic collaboration between schools and indigenous communities in developing culturally responsive curricula.
